Back to School Guide

Back-To-School Guide

Tips for Kids, Parents, and Teachers to start the year strong!

As Summer winds down and those backpacks start coming out of the closet, it’s officially time to think about heading back to school. A new year brings a fresh start and lots of exciting challenges, and I’m here to help ensure everyone is ready to head into it feeling healthy, supported, and confident. Below are some helpful tips and reminders to make this school year a great one, for kids and the grown-ups who help them thrive.

FOR KIDS: Your Back-to-School Checklist

1. Sleep Like a Champion
Getting enough sleep helps you think clearly, feel happier, and grow strong. Try to:

  • Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.
  • Stop using screens (like phones or tablets) at least an hour before bed.
  • Create a calm bedtime routine: wash up, read a book, and snuggle in.

Recommended sleep:

Younger children (under 6): 10–13 hours, including naps

Ages 6–12: 9–12 hours per night

Ages 13–18: 8–10 hours per night

2. Eat a Power-Packed Breakfast
Don’t skip it! A good breakfast helps you stay focused and energized. Try:

  • Oatmeal, eggs, toast, fruit, yogurt, or whole grain cereal.
  • Drink water, not just juice or soda.

3. Be a Germ-Fighting Hero

  • Wash hands often
  • Cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue
  • Don’t share drinks or snacks
  • Let a teacher or parent know if you’re not feeling well.

 4. Use Your Backpack the Right Way

  • Use both shoulder straps.
  • Keep heavy items close to your back.
  • Clean it out weekly (trust me, no one wants to find old lunch leftovers).

5. Take Care of Your Mind

It’s okay to feel nervous, excited, or unsure.

  • Talk to someone you trust like your parents, teachers, counselors.
  • Take brain breaks when needed: stretch, breathe, or take a quiet moment.
  • Be kind to yourself: mistakes are part of learning!

FOR PARENTS: Setting the Tone for a Healthy Year

As caregivers, you are your child’s first teacher and biggest support system. Here’s how to help your child succeed emotionally, physically, and socially this school year:

1. Re-establish Routines Early

  • Start adjusting bedtime and wake-up times 1–2 weeks before school starts.
  • Create a morning checklist to keep things smooth and stress-free.
  • Encourage screen-free time before bed to promote quality sleep.

 2. Prioritize Nutrition & Hydration

  • Plan simple, balanced breakfasts.
  • Pack snacks that are low in sugar and high in fiber/protein.
  • Send a reusable water bottle daily — hydration supports focus and mood.

 3. Stay on Top of Health Visits

  • Schedule annual check-ups, vision/hearing screenings, and vaccinations.
  • Talk to your pediatrician about managing chronic conditions like asthma or allergies at school.
  • If your child needs medication during school hours, coordinate with the school nurse early.

4. Watch for Emotional Health Clues

  • Ask open-ended questions about their day.
  • Watch for signs of anxiety, social issues, or academic stress.
  • Normalize asking for help, and be sure to remind them it’s a strength to ask for help, not a weakness.

5. Communicate with Teachers

  • Share any health concerns or learning differences.
  • Keep an open line for checking in about your child’s progress and well-being.
  • Remember: you’re all on the same team.

FOR TEACHERS: Partnering for Student Wellness

Our Teachers are superheroes, and also key allies in keeping kids physically and emotionally well during the school year. Teachers, be sure you are taking care of yourselves as well by eating a well-balanced breakfast and taking adequate amounts of water. In addition to getting enough sleep.

There are many parents, such as myself, who are willing to help with any needs the school or students may have throughout the school year. Don’t be afraid to ask!

  • Encourage balanced eating during lunch/snack times.
